A Tribute to My Mom......

Love you Mom!

My Mom passed away on Saturday Dec 10, 2011

Oh Mom.... I miss you so crazy much!!!

(I read this at her funeral)

My Mom’s favorite quote was:

“Every Day holds the Possibility of a Miracle!

That is the way My Mom her lived her life. She was always looking for yet another miracle....It became even more evident in her life the past seven years after she was diagnosed with her illness. She loved Jesus with all of her heart and had a deep faith in God!.

I have never met another woman that had an inner strength and determination to “Never Give Up” then my Mom. My Mom is the strongest and bravest lady I know! And her faith in God was strong!

That doesn’t mean she never got down and discouraged because she did. But… she chose not to stay there too long. She somehow managed to rise above her troubles and her faith in God and her determination always took her through.

Last Thursday when she was diagnosed with acute leukemia and she was told that this could very well take her life…. She simply smiled at her Doctor and said Ok but… I have a ticket for Florida in January and I still plan on going. When we left the Dr. Office and we were returning home, I said to her Mom? Are you fearful? And she said no Vern, I’m not! I believe at that point God was giving her a peace that passes all understanding that only God can give. I was reminded of the verse in

Psalms 56:3 and it says…

“But when I am afraid I put my trust in you. I Praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God so… Why should I be afraid?

Two days later mom made a turn for the worst. But several hours before she passed away… she still had a very strong will to live and she was not about to give up. Within the hour, we knew she was getting ready to pass on from this life. She was no longer able to speak. My dad and all us kids and most of the grandchildren were there singing and keeping a watchful eye on her. We were able to express our love for her and I also said Mom, Send me a sign when you see Jesus and when you finally get to hug my brother Nelson who passed away 36 years ago when he was the young age of 12. Maybe send me a butterfly or a dove or something to let me know it’s you! She squeezed my hand so tightly and I just betcha... she will see to it! Soon after that moment she raised her Arm to heaven and waived. She did this several times. Before this she was so weak there would have been no way for her to do that and keep it there for a length of time. As we ponder that moment… we believe she was possibly making her Grand entry in to Heaven and she was saying Good by to us! After that she went into a peaceful sleep and soon she very quietly left her body to meet Jesus!

I wrote a letter to my Mom the morning of her funeral......

Dear Mom... You were one classy lady, a real class act. I loved that about you!

"You were the Wind Beneath My Wings"

You taught me Mom to have that same strong faith in God that you had and I am forever grateful for that. You were my shopping buddy and my best friend. Now what....

You made the best Amish Roust and all 60 of us couldn't wait to get that first bite every Thanksgiving meal. You also taught us how to make it and we will carry on that special tradition. When ever we eat Roust from hear on out.... it will taste even better then ever and we will be sure to remember you with every bite.

Mom, I'll miss stopping by your house and seeing you with your computer on your lap checking your face book page and emails. You were so good with the computer for your age mom.

I will miss your contagious smile, your latest ideas in changing up your house. And oh.... how we would dream and scheme about anything.

It will be hard to go to Florida this winter with you not there.

Mom...... I will just plane down miss you!!!

And one more thing Mom.... You were always so concerned about Dad. Well, let me tell ya Mom..When you were slowly leaving us on Saturday afternoon, I gently whispered into your ear and I made a promise to you that we would take care of Dad. Well.... I think you would be quite proud of me Mom. Because you see, before we went to your viewing last night I cut the hairs growing out of his ears. and I also cut a few hairs growing on his upper lip.

Now.... I know you cut his toenails too.... but I do have limits!

So..... Mom and my best friend, I'm signing off for now. It's really not GOOD BY.....It's just

I just took a load of things to my store at Odds and Ends in Oxford. If you have never been there, you should try it.

It is on 3rd street and it's actually the Main Street going through town.

Look for the Rite Aid store on the right going south and it is directly across the street. Usually a large open flag is out.

My area is right inside the door and also the walk in store front window . ( It's the one on the left. (There are 2 store front windows)

Florence out did herself when she unloaded this piece. It was one of my favorite pieces found in the barn,

Florence would always be here helping with the show but this year she decided to create her own pieces.

my mom is a breast cancer survivor!! When my store was at the barn in Cochranville.... my mom would make all my pillows. For several years she was not able to do any sewing. Now she is back and doing well. Need a custom sewn pillow?

This is our 3rd annual “Christmas Extravaganza” Open house.

We are very excited and it's starting to take shape.

I am excited to once again invite you into our home. This year is even more special because..... we almost decided to cancel the show for this year. My hubby had a heart attack 2 weeks ago and he spent a week in the hospital. I am happy to say he is mending well. We are blessed and we thank God for life! It took the "Wind Out Of My Sail" for a bit but.... with my hubby's encouragement and support...... and lots of good help all around me, I am happy to say...... The Christmas Extravaganza is on!

This is the only time during the year when my house is open and full of our most special pieces saved for this sale….. but not will the house be open…. the barn will be full as well!

In the mean time I have lots to do but not before finishing a road trip with my best friend…(my hubby) in Wyoming and Colorado. But after that it’s working full speed

I took some more items to Oxford today.....

but all the while keeping my eye on the sweet little man who walks up and down the street waiting for my meter to be empty so he can give me yet another ticket! So..... just a bit of a warning. When you shop in Oxford, it is only street side parking. A quarter for one hour will do it.

My problem is...... I get carried away working in my booth and I lose track of time. So today as I was working in my Store front window, I saw the sweet old man looking at my car and I literally ran out of the shop to stop him from giving me a ticket! He had already started writing me up so I pleaded with him and sweet talked him from giving me yet another ticket. I got one 2 weeks ago and I did not want another one. So..... Thanks sweet little man!!!

It's been one busy week! Got home from a week of vacation with family and a day later our little grandson was born. And yes the new Mama and Daddy were on vacation with us and..... camping at that! Baby Trever was born on July 25Th. He is our 4Th Grandchild and so far..... all boys! Little boys are the greatest!

I was so......honored to be there for the Birth Of Baby Trever! The miracle of birth is always so amazing to me and to actually be there and experience it, well words cannot even describe the feeling! Simply amazing!

I toyed around with the idea for awhile and decided that now is the right time. It is close to my house so I can keep a close eye on things and keep it fresh and exciting! And..... I also have a few of your favorite vendors who typically join me when I have my barn sales, joining me as well!

Hubby is excited because he gets some of his barn back that I've been using for the past couple of years. Oh well, he deserves it but..... don't get too comfortable Hon, A girl needs a lot of space to paint and create!

just so you know.... I do not own the store and most likely I will not be there when you come (probably home painting more stuff!) I am only renting a few rooms.

Take a peak and see what I took over so far. I am set up in the foyer so as soon as you enter the building well, that's me. "The Cottonwood House" is on on my price tags so.... no missing me. The end of July I will also be putting my things in the( front glass show room) that looks out into the street. So look for me in two different rooms.

If you like chippy, You will love this piece. It has layers of chippy paint and an aged patina look with out the lead!

This was our second Christmas Extravaganza "Down On The Farm" It is the only show I do

inside our house and the barn. My other shows are in the barn only. The question I get asked many times is,"Isn't this a lot of work?

To tell you the truth, it is a lot of work...... and EXHAUSTING I might add! But..... I really do enjoy it so much! Especially when I watch the excitement and the anticipation on my customers faces as they come come through the front door.

So in case you were not here..... take a peak and see what you missed!

It was an absolutely gorgeous balmy day as the 4:00 hour approached. We opened the doors at 4:00 sharp and soon the house was bustling with excited customers running from room to room taking it all in. Decisions had to be made quickly to "Buy it or not" if you thought you could go to the barn and think it over and then come back into the house and think it would still be there...... well let me tell you, there was a lot of disappointment when the item was no longer there!

We sold several of these bird houses. They stand approx. 3 feet tall. We happen to still have this one. It can be yours for only $99.00

This Wicker set was displayed in the barn. It was not sold during the show but.... several inquiry's have been made about it in the past several days. If interested let me know as soon as possible!! (it is in great condition and very sturdy)

These 2 little guys were just way to cute. So much for shopping when there were eggs to be gathered. They took the eggs home for breakfast the next morning.

This vanity was handcrafted by a local furniture maker. It is still here and it sits in my family room. I may just decide to keep it for myself. I absolutely love it. You might still be able to twist my arm and I might........... well, maybe sell it.

I wish I had a before and after picture of this sweet desk. All I can say is, What a transformation!

This was the 3rd day. Each night I would redo the rooms to fill in vacant spots and bring in new pieces. So if you were here one day and came back the next day, Most likely it had a different look. That was the fun part for me. I love to change furniture around. My hubby never knows where the sofa is going to be when he gets home from work!! Or where the bed is going to land up at. Oh well.....

Everything in our family room was for sale except for the Red Sofa. Just a side note. I'm looking to purchase 2 comfortable chairs to go in this room. Looking for a French Country Look. My creative juices are not flowing when it comes to decorating with a red sofa. Any Ideas??????

In order to get ready for this big event, everyone pitched in to help get ready. Even my grand babies knew mom-mom could use a bit of extra help.

This is pretty much my life several month before a show. Paint brush in hand for days on end!!

Even though my Mom was in a lot of pain on this particular day, she insisted on helping me. Several days after the show she had surgery. Thanks Mom!!!

So now I will put my paint brush to rest until after Christmas and enjoy some time off. Off to more inportant things at hand..... Christmas shopping, entertaining, baking cookies, having coffee with friends, spending time with family, baby sittng my grandkids, date night with hubby, etc.........

The Blessing Cottage

We have this great little apartment in our house. Apartment??? NO, I don't like how it sounds. Not very personal in my opinion. So I'm going to call it "THE BLESSING COTTAGE" So..... come along and help me do a makeover. It needs to be very special!!! I've been mulling ideas around in my head for weeks thinking how and what style I want to use.

Shabby Chic? Whimsical and cottage like? Maybe more of a Pottery style look? Well, the creative juices just were not flowing. Until.... I went to one of my favorite auction houses in Maryland and I laid my eyes on this fabulous chair. As soon as I saw it I knew that was it. It was my Inspiration Piece!!!

This chair is the most comfortable chair ever!! After I sank into it... I wanted to camp out for a long....while!! It was in great condition and for only $65.00.... well you know the rest of the story. I knew it was a keeper for sure!

And..... so my journey of decorating ' The Blessing Cottage" begins.......

This isn't just any old cottage but a quiet haven of rest... where someone may want to come and get away from the busyness of life. A place to get re energized and relax for a day, a week , maybe even a month.ahhh. sounds heavenly!

Cozy, Comfortable, yet Classy and Elegant.

All of the above! That's what I'm wanting this cottage to be.

Check out the bedroom. The previous dwellers decided they wanted a red room with a gray accent wall. It was very beautiful and tastefully done. But...... I would like to give this room a different feel. Red is suppose to make you feel hungry and energetic (Ever notice that a lot of restaurants have red decor? They want you to be hungry so you eat a lot)

This bedroom needs to feel warm and relaxing. It also needs to appeal to male and female. Not too feminine nor too manly.

There are no outside windows to the room so no direct sunshine flows into the room.

So here's what I've been thinking....

I could paint the walls an eggplant color. And then do black and white accessories. Maybe a distressed black dresser, a cozy chair. A Down comforter, luxurious pillows, etc.... it would feel calm and relaxing. I recently saw a room with these colors and I just can't get it out of my head. It was absolutely beautiful. It might not sound to cool but trust me, it was!!! I really dislike anything even remotely the color purple. go figure!!!

Or I could do an all white and cream room. The walls would be cream and different shades of white and cream through out the room. Sounds peaceful and Serene! But maybe boring???

But....... for now I need to prime this wall ! Uggg! I do not like to paint!. You would think since I paint furniture I would like painting a wall. Well, I don't. but someones got to do it.

This cupboard has been sitting in the storage area of our basement for years storing unused cans of paint. I've decided to give it new life and a new purpose. It's going to go in the Blessing Cottage. I have big plans for it. But for now you will have to wait and see......

Weekend Barn Sale

I picked the coldest day of the year to have my barn sale. and boy was it cold!

But that did not keep my die hard customers from coming on out to see what was cooking this month.

                         In order to get ready

         for my sale this month I

           needed a bit of extra

Below is a sampling of some of the items I had. I fell in love with the white vanity. One of those pieces I had a hard time selling. But….. if I kept everything there would not be a sale. Right??? Sigh…. gone once gone twice, SOLD! $125.00

But, the darling white chair is still in my barn and it is only 35.00. The fabric is kind of like a hard plastic. It really is sweet the way it is or imagine what it could look like with a slipcover on it.? That may need to be my next project. If you want it as is…… email me and I will hold it for you.

Most of these items were sold except for the mirror with hooks. $45.00 and it be be hanging in your home. Let me know if you can’t live without it.

The desk on the left sold for 149.99. The green chair was only 55.00. Wow, what a steal! Oh, check out the black board for only 18.00. yep, sold! the chest of drawers is still waiting for a good home……. only $95.00 The top of it has wallpaper on it. It is really cool!

The couple above bought these 2 wire baskets and the green side table. I quickly ran to my chicken coupe,gathered the eggs and sent them on there way. Fresh Brown eggs! YUM!!!!

Below is a cabinet for your flat screen TV. Drawers for whatever suits your fancy. This cabinet in in excellent condition. If you are looking for a TV cabinet, this may be just what you are looking for. And guess what? It is only $65.00

The blue bedroom chair sold for 45.00. It is a very comfy chair! The red stool, I new it would not last long. 18.00 and yep, sold!

Since closing my doors at The Cottonwood House at 227 Cochran Street, I am now using my own barn to take care of this crazy addiction I created for myself. Bless my dear hubby for allowing me to take over a portion of his barn.

Imagine that!

What was once a resting place for his tractors is now the home of all my fun treasures I scour for at auctions. I am a happy camper when I have a paint brush in hand and I get to transform a piece of furniture. I guess once a shabby chicer, always a shabby chicer

Well as I sit here on this chilly November night....November..when did that happen...anyway, the kiddo's are tucked in for the night...the fireplace is keeping me toasty warm...and Whoo-Whoo Phillie's just scored....!!!!!!!!!! What could be better!!! Ok I would give up my warm spot tonight for my hubby's spot...he is at the game!!!!!!!!!

But anyway...we have been working like CRAZY here to get ready for the Open House...are we crazy some have asked...opening our home like this....yes...we may be a bit on the crazy side, we will let you know when this is all over, but it sure is fun...a New Adventure!!!

We may have been staying up too late painting, pricing, cleaning, watching the Phils, but it will be worth it for you all...the house and barn are being transformed right before our eyes...we hope you will be pleased...!!! Actually...I know you will be pleased!!!

Farewell, Cottonwood

One week has past since the yellow doors at The Cottonwood House have closed for the last time. The past 6 years have been a dream come true and I am so grateful for the opportunity to have lived the dream.

Do I miss it? Absolutely! I miss your smiles as you walked through the door wondering what treasure was awaiting you.

I miss the smell of coffee as it's aroma filled the old barn.

I miss having that one on one conversation with many of you as we got into each others world.

I miss the little children who loved coming with there Mommy's and thinking that it was a really cool shop.

I miss feeling like I was playing house everyday by getting to rearrange furniture and decorate.

I miss having my hubby stop by just to say Hi and get a cup of coffee for the road.

I miss having Jacob and Eli (My grand kids) coming to work with me, sitting at the counter pretending they were Mom-mom's Secretary.

I miss working with my daughters, Carmela and Sondra, Thanks girls, I couldn't have done it without you!!

I miss working along side of Randall who so faithfully entered my inventory each week, Thanks Randall, That is one job I would pay some one to do any day.

I will miss decorating the old barn at Christmas time. Christmas music, twinkling lights, the smell of hot cider and especially midnight madness. How fun was that?

I will miss the parking lot sales and all the vendors who filled the parking lot with loads of great items.

I miss closing up at night, getting into my car and many times feeling exhausted from carrying furniture but yet a deep sense of gratitude and a sense of satisfaction that I loved what I was doing.

And, most of all I will miss each of you, my customers whom many have become my friends.

What will I do now? First of all, let me show you a few memories of the last week we were open.

THE YELLOW DOORS WERE THE FIRST THING THAT GREETED ME EVERY MORNING. IT MADE ME SMILE!

My hubby mowing the lawn for me. It was a sad day when we put up this sign.

This was the our last load the day we cleaned out.
Boo Ho0! I think a box of tissues were in order.

Sammy, my niece along with Sondra. Sammy bought the most beautiful hankerchiefs. She said she will use them to put in a card when sending one to a friend. Sammy is like her mom in the fact that she loves to send cards to friends to make them feel special. Aunt Vern loves you Sammy!

This is Doug and Jessie. Doug is our son and he just got married to his Sweet Heart this summer with an outside wedding at our house. Jessie found an easel to assist her in her love of painting.I just recently saw her first piece of work. She does amazing work. I think you'll be seeing more of her and her art! Love you guys!

This is my best friend. Her name is Vern as well and we have been friends since we were little girls. Vern owns Ashley's gift across the road from The Cottonwood House. If you have not yet visited her shop, you have a real treat awaiting you. We always looked out for each other while tending our shops.

Sondra and I doing what we do best. Moving furniture around. Sondra is small but boy is she strong!

Thanks Hon, Seems like I always had a Honey Do List for you when you walked through the yellow doors, but this was a big one. Cleaning out the store the last day. Thanks many times over. You were and are my biggest Fan! Love YA!!!

I loved all the vines growing around the outside of the barn. But this is my favorite. Fresh Ripe Grapes. Can't beat that.

4 Year old Eli loved coming to Mom-Mom's shop and playing in the court yard with his brother Jake. His daddy worked on some of my furniture. Looks like Eli learned from the best.

We were actually faking a smile for the camera. It was our very last day. We looked at each other and both started crying. Thanks for the memories Sondra!!!

It's Nap time for baby Max and he needed a bed. This adorable cradle was one of our last pieces to have been sold. So cute!

It is now full and over flowing with a few things we brought back from The Cottonwood House and things I've been painting and getting ready to sell at the Christmas Open House. That's right. We may have shut our doors at 227 Cochran Street but we are NOT stopping there. Nov 5,6,7 & 8 we will open our home to all our Cottonwood customers with Christmas gifts and decorations along with great shabby chic items and cottage decor. Makin' Memories...

Oh the tears....
I'm sitting in front of the computer, looking through the hundreds of pics we have of Cottonwood...finding it very hard to gain back my composure (come on sonj, control yourself...there are customers here)!

Over the last 4 years, LOTs of memories have been made. And If I can get through without balling my eyes out, I thought I'd take the time to share with you some of my favs...

cold winter mornings running around the store trying to sweat (at least a little) in order to stay warm, turkey hill runs in the summer (break time!), getting trapped on the stairs with my mom carrying a cabinet 5X the size of us while laughing hysterically (not a good combination), eating tomatoes and grapes from the vines, late nights decorating, a surprise delivery from the "snack shack", random animal attacks (bats, cats, wasps, mice!!!), tea time, listening to great stories from random customers, family/friends visiting, watching a happy customer leave with a great deal!, Monday laughs with my sis, midnight madness, Monday morning chats with Mr. UPS man, daily muscle toning (that furniture is heavy!), auction runs...praying as much as possible for the LARGE piece of furniture to not fall out of the OPENED vehicle (crazy mama), hearing mom give a list of "honey do's" to dad whenever he stopped by, my little nephews (boy boy's) playing secretary - teaching them how to be entrepreneurs, thunderstorms in the barn, meeting a new face each day, Monday coffee visits from my dad, joke time with my brother, ladies nite out at Chili's (you know who you are), left over tea food, scouting out the new treasures from our vendors, windexing every big and little piece of glassware (pretty much took all day!), hiding with Carm :), tostoados, the over head light falling from the ceiling & almost taking me down with it, the feeling of owning a little part of Cochranville, coming in everyday feeling privileged and blessed to work with FAMILY, and the list goes on...

There you have it.
So many memories...
It's hard to look back and think that -- it's all over. But like we've been saying...when one door closes, another one opens. Different seasons come and go & God wants us to embrace EACH ONE. And although it's a hard one to let go, we'll always cherish the memories that we made and say..."it's been a great ride!".

Thank you all for making these last few years at Cottonwood wonderful!!!

Life is like reading a book!

Once again today I am doing what I love to do. Yep, working at The Cottonwood House. Thanks to each of you for coming and helping me clear out the barn and taking advantage of the great sales. It's starting to feel empty. That's a good thing since I do need to sell everything by the end of the month. But... on the other hand I so want to fill it back up again because that is what I normally do. I am having to restrain myself. big time! I want to keep buying and keep playing house.

Let me Just share with you some of my feelings and emotions and even some of my new dreams. So, pull up a chair and lets pretend we are having coffee together. About the time I think I have my emotions under control, a customer comes in and says "I'm so sad you are going out of business". I reply, me too and I tear up Again!!! sometimes even in front of men customers! Now, that's a no-no. They probably think, get it together lady! What is wrong with you? oh well, sigh!!

I think that life is like reading a book. Some books in life are better reading than others. In fact some are so good that when you read the last chapter, its some what depressing and hard to lay down.. In my own life I feel like I've been reading a book. In fact it's the best book ever but I am almost finished and reading the last page. Done!

You know, I could decide to never pick up another book because this one was so good and there may never be another book as good as the one I just read. OR.... I could say, That was a good book!!! and I can't wait to see what the next book I pick up is all about. I think the Lord is teaching me something here and that is, until we close one chapter in our lives we won't ever experience the next chapter. The next book may be even better then the previous one. I am really getting excited to see the what the future holds. I am starting to get a bit of a preview. Could be pretty exciting actually!

So maybe in your life you have finished a good book as well and not quite ready to lay it down. But maybe God has another good book that is not even off the press yet but ready to be released any day now. Pick it up my friend and enjoy the next journey as I am going to do in my life

We have decided to close the doors at this location for The Cottonwood House *wiping the tears from our eyes* Yes, you read correctly... we agonized over our decision but due to many, many different circumstances it is something we feel we must do.

For the last 5 years we have poured our heart and soul and physical bodies (that furniture is HEAVY you know) into first "Bittersweet Antiques" and then what you now know as "The Cottonwood House."
It has been our dear mom's dream to create a beautiful, peaceful and inspirational environment for each and every customer that has come in. And in our oh so humble opinion she has gone above and beyond that dream!!!! Cottonwood fulfilled a life-long passion she had but even though this season is over we know that whatever she will do in the future she will SUCCEED MIGHTILY!!! You go Mama!!

Hi to all my blogger friends. I am indeed sad and sorry today because I I need to let you all know that I am closing my shop. "The Cottonwood house." I was not expecting this to happen but the past year we have seen a decline in sales. This is not easy for me to do but necessary. I have loved meeting so many of you at the shop and I will miss you. I will also miss what I love to do the most and that is playing house everyday at my shop. I will miss being able to decorate, rearrange furniture, looking for something new to bring in that would bring a smile to a customers face. I will miss going to an auction and leaving there with a truck load of treasures. Working at the Cottonwood House was a dream that I am so glad I was not only able to dream about but to actually have been a part of. But, Even though I am leaving the big blue barn doesn't mean I am throwing in the towel for good. Besides, once a shabby chic chix. always a shabby chic chix!!! I do have a few idea up my sleeve. So stay tuned.
Now, in order to liquidate a barn full of furniture, accessories, shutters, doors and lots of great used clothing, we are having a great big sale. For starters most everything is at least 25% off unless already marked down. But hurry, I have a feeling things will fly out of here. Everything MUST GO.!!! We will be out by Aug 31th if not before.

Just Another Day...

Saturday, July 4...while everyone was out and about doin' the picnic thing, my mom and I were living life here at CW.

After doing the normal routine stuff...
turning on all 10,000 lights (slight exaggeration), setting up outside, making coffee, checking the business e-mail, sorting and organizing Ele Ela's, and sweeping off the dusty front porch...

it was time to sit down and wait for some creative juices to flow from our brains.
Yep, it was time to rearrange!!!
After coming up with a plan, I realized...

this was going to be a major project & it could potentially take ALL DAY.

So to give us some energy...we once again got our fix at the neighboring Turkey Hill & then dove right into it!
After lots of pushing, pulling & lifting...we were spent.

So hey, what could be better then a break?

A nap!!!

And a few minutes later we were up and at it again.

And a few hours later, we were done!
Take a look at the changes...

By the way...most times when my mom gets the urge to change the ENTIRE store... in my eyes, it seems like a lot of work and a little overwhelming.
But the truth is, I LOVE IT & I'm thankful I get to do it with HER!

Memories of a beautiful day. Our Son's wedding.

June 13, 2009. It's not just another day. The big event was about to take place. After weeks of planning and working around the clock getting ready for this event, I jumped out of bed that morning full of excitement. Today is the day our baby who is now 23 was getting married. Doug was about to get married to Jessie Steadman. My emotions where everywhere. Excitement, panic, sadness, happy, and so much to do before the magic hour of 4:00. You see, the wedding was about to take place at our home. In the meadow down by the creek. The flowers were planted, the grass was mowed to perfection and and the natural setting was perfect. We worked hard along with the brides family to make it a very special setting for a very special couple. The Bride's mom was the florist and she out did her self for her daughters special day. She does it as a business and she is the best in my opinion. I have never seen so many flowers. Everything was so beautiful. The forecast called for 20% chance of a shower. No worry there. the sun was shining brightly and everything was coming together as planned. But around 1:00, it started to rain and rain and rain. Panic started to set in. Oh Dear, Now What!!! 45 min later and 2 inches of rain, we most certainly needed to move swiftly. We now had mud, water puddles and a flood under the tent where the reception was to take place. The place became alive like a hive of bees. Brooms being used to sweep out the water under the tent, wood chips were laid in strategic areas. Some of the flowers were laid over due to the wind and it seemed like a bad dream. ok, but the wedding must go on and it did. I had to quickly make a decision weather I was going to let this ruin my day. It's times like this where I am reminded to "Sweat The Small Stuff In Life" And that is what I did. All the hard work that we did leading up to this hour seemed somewhat spoiled. But you know what? Even though every little detail was not perfect in my opinion and believe me, things like that do bother me but I had to let it go. Two hours later the first guest started to arrive. Makeup, hair-do's, and the finishing touches on The bride were complete. The sun was shining and it turned out to be a beautiful afternoon and evening. By now I was relaxed and enjoying the moment.
Watching Jessie walk down the aisle with her dad by her side was a special moment I will always tuck away in a special place in my heart. My tears were flowing and the moment was full of emotions. I knew by the look on Doug's face at that moment that it was the moment he dreamed of for so long. Jessie was a beautiful bride. And Doug, well I must say, he looked quite handsome!!
My tears were tears of happiness for both of them but also tears of the reality that now I no longer was going to be the # 1 lady in Doug's life. As a mom we nurture and care for our kids like no one else can. But there comes a time when we need to let go and encourage them to fly on there own. I don't know about the rest of you mom's out there but that is not easy for me to do. Could anyone else love, nurture and take care of Doug like I do? Yes, I believe that Jessie, his new bride will be able to pick up the baton where I left off and run with it. It's a tall order she has to fill but I have all the confidence in the world that she will do it well. You see, I have grown to love Jessie like my own daughter. I will never take the place of her mom and I would never want to but I feel such love for her and that makes all this so easy to let go. Jessie is not only beautiful, but she is sensitive to others, she knows how to love, she knows how to laugh and have a good time. She is a wonderful cook and she will make her home full of warmth and beauty because of her inner beauty. Love You Jessie!!! Doug will make a wonderful husband. He loves adventure, dreams big, and loves life. He will make her laugh and he knows how to make life not so serious. He will nurture and cherish Jessie like no one else. Doug has always treated me (his Mom) with highest respect and showed his love for me. He learned this by watching his dad. And now it will be easy for him to love and Cherish his new bride. Love you Doug!!
It's now 2 weeks since the wedding took place and I am enjoying the memories and the pictures. I hope you enjoy them as well.

is what we hear most often as soon as the weather warms up...my mom likes to remind us of this when we are here....and she is right it is lovely to have it open on these warm spring, almost summer days!!!

Do you like to decorate with flags...do you have one outside your house perhaps on your front porch...I love flags, if I had a big old front porch I would hang one on it but I don't although my hubby and I have one hung on our garage...

anyway...i just love what they symbolize...our country....our freedoms...

Sonj...really, really, loves these tornado thingers...is that a word?...the girls at turkey hill know her so well...she comes up to the checkout and they ring her up for 2 without asking....

on the other hand...i picked up 2 watermelons today...on sale...at Weis...for 2.99 and brought one in with me...well we ate half and have some leftovers but...by the end of the day that may be gone as well...

So customers ask us a lot "What can be done with old windows or doors?"...perhaps they see our HUGE pile of windows and doors in our courtyard...well here are a few options!!!

Build a greenhouse...very creative!

Make it a miniature one!!

Turn it into a window box

Another greenhouse

Very cool pot rack!!

Hang several together to make a wall....we've also seen this as a divider inside a house!!!

The front doors are actually old windows attached to a box the homeowner made...and you have a very cute cupboard!

So there you have it...you don't have to be super handy just creative, think outside the box or if you have a super-handy "fellow" in your life...enlist him!!!

Today is a rainy, dreary day here at Cottonwood! And, we are dreaming of the sunny south. Here is our crew on our recent trip to Florida...!!!

Ok these are very random, we know, but we need your help. I need new cake idea's. My Eli is turning 4 and well, with 3 boy's in my clan I am running out of GREAT cake idea's. I think I have done everything...tractors, and more tractors, dinosaurs, trains, planes and automobiles...just kidding no planes or automobiles...but seriously I need your help...what should I do?

So in an effort to see if anybody really reads this silly blog, we are asking for your help. Leave us a comment about a new cake and it will put a smile on our faces! :-)

We know our posts can be somewhat scattered and random...chalk that up to blogger being so finicky and lack of time, and really no good reason, but if we know you are reading, well then, we will do better!

Ok, we have the coolest chalkboards, this one is huge, it's about as tall as Sonj, granted she likes to claim she is 5 feet on a GOOD day, but yes it's tall!

Ashley found this pink shirt & after taking the LARGE shoulder pads out, she thought it was cute. My taste is quite different... it's definitely "original" - Ashley all the way...and I really did like it on her, but I don't think I could ever wear something like it.
Anyways, Ash found two! And these are the results of her trying to take us back to the 80's.

After a few long days (and nights!) Ele Ela's is open for business!

This bed was a lot harder to put together then it looks =)

Everytime Shannon and I put one of the boards up, the other's would fall. So after 10 hrs. (no, just kidding...more like 1 hr.) we finally figured out the puzzle.

Ashley's excitement during the whole project motivated all of us. About every second she would walk around the room with a big smile on her face and say, "i think it's coming together guys, it's really coming together!" And might I add...she said this even when there was hardly anyting in the room.

At the end of each work night...she didn't want to leave. I dont know where she got the energy, it probably rubbed off from my mom. Wish I had some of that...you're welcome to pass it on anytime girls =)

Hmmmm...too many things to place, not sure where to put it...

We carried 4 of these heavy shelves through the snow and up the stairs. Our momma had us workin' =)

Our work in progress:

After finishing up the black ceiling, it was time to move forward with the next thing on the list...

MORE COLOR!

Needless to say, we were a little SHOCKED when we opened up the piant can...

PINK!?!?!!???

Oh my goodness, this stuff was bright!
Thankfully, after it was on the wall and dried, the pink started turning into
RED...just what we wanted ;)
Now we can relax.

This is my dad's most recent project...
our dressing rooms.
Our plans are to hang black, white and red fabric from each side.

And here's the finished product for our ~BOLD~ red. Do you like it?

My mom bought this sewing machine at an auction the other night. She absolutely loves it. Finally~~~a piece of equipment from the auction that acutally works (ha, I couldn't say the same thing for her vacuum purchases)

And here she is, busy stitching together the red drapes for the dressing rooms.

Like I said, "Ele Ela" is a work in progress, And we're getting there.
